On August 1. 2007. an eight-lane. three-span section of the I-35W Bridge across the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis collapsed at approximately 6:00 p. m. It was crowded with rush hour traffic. The final death toll was 13. The bridge was the main north-south route through the city.
